Investing is a marathon not a sprint

flag With the Commonwealth Games under way in Glasgow and Michael Shelley winning gold in the men’s marathon and Jess Trengove winning bronze in the women’s marathon yesterday I felt it appropriate to consider similarities between running a marathon and investing.

In modern society we have come to expect instant results however there are many lessons to be learnt from marathon runners.

  • Prepare thoroughly
  • Start with a clear goal or vision
  • Keep a regular check on your progress compared to expectations
  • Be prepared to adapt to the changes
  • Persevere when times get tough
  • A quality coach will pay dividends

One big difference is that whilst Michael and Jess have finished running there is no end point with investing. At Stamford Financial we encourage clients to build up assets that will pay an income so that they can live on that income and retain the assets (as opposed to selling assets to live on). These assets can then be passed on from generation to generation to create a legacy.

If you would like to talk more about investing for the long-term (or running a marathon) then get in contact with us at Stamford Financial, we’d love to hear from you.
